I have always been very crafty. I have taken art and painting classes at the Texas Tech University, University of California Berkeley, The College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA, and Laney College in Oakland, CA.
I have always liked creating beautiful things with my hands and my imagination. Before I had children I displayed and sold my paintings in different galleries, stores and restaurants in San Francisco and Oakland.
When I finally had my daughter I knew I had to come up with a more non-toxic creative outlet. (As well as one that could be started and stopped in a hurry.)
When people kept referring to my beautiful baby girl (who happened to still be bald) as a handsome boy. I just had to do something. I tried to find bows or headbands or anything, that wasn’t horrible, but there was nothing to buy that I liked. I put my creativity to the test.
Once I figured out how to make the bows, I just couldn’t stop myself from coming up with lots of different styles. When I took my daughter out wearing her new gorgeous bows, people kept asking me where I bought the bows or if I could make some bows for them.
With all the requests that I received I knew there was an opportunity to start a business. I began cold calling children’s boutiques and the response was overwhelmingly positive..
I started doing special events and festivals when a good friend of mine pressured me into doing her event. It changed my life. I have always liked making things, but I have always enjoyed making friends more. That is what the festivals gives me, an opportunity to interact with new friends. As the years pass they see photos of my daughter as she is growing up and they show me the pictures of their children or grandchildren wearing their special Sherri Bow item, or the hair accessory that they wore to a special event or party. It is amazing how the things that I design have become part of their special occasions and everyday life.
As my daughter has got older my product line has expanded to meet my daughter’s requests/challenges. Besides bows, I sell headbands, tiaras, decorated flip flops, bottle cap hair clips and necklaces, hats, pencil cases, lunch boxes, bags, and baby hats, blankets, and headbands. I have also expanded my product line to include some of my own wants and desire; custom purses, aprons, sun glass cases, beaded headbands, shoe clips, and feathered boot bands.
My accessories are sold in high-end boutiques, beauty salons, the web and now in my own design studio in Oakland, California. I also sell my hand crafted accessories at different festivals throughout the year.
My items are always a hit with girls and ladies of all ages. Who would of thought having a baby girl would have brought me such a fun and fulfilling career and well as a lovely young lady.
